We frequently hear about the “crisis” in mathematics education in the US. Jamie York’s re-imagining of the teaching of math is founded on a deeply held belief that
We need to redefine the purpose and nature of math
Math isn’t about getting through a text book, teaching procedures blindly
Math should be an adventure for both the teacher and the student.
The ability to overcome challenge and to struggle is part of the adventure. Fear is not. Yet, too often, fear that a child will lose in the race to “get ahead” compels educators and parents to overload students with too many topics. The consequence is superficial and rote learning with a loss of connection to the wonders of math.
Our goal is to reawaken your sense of the WONDER OF MATH, so you can pass it on to your students.
Topics include: Core Principles for Teaching Math, Math Puzzles and Problem Solving, Geometry, Goals for Teaching Math, Ratios and Building up to π.
